Here is the part that catches people off guard: the City of Albuquerque's own 2026 minimum wage is $11.85 an hour, and it is not the number that governs. New Mexico's statewide floor is $12.00, and the higher rate wins. The city says so in its own 2026 wage notice.

That holds across the metro. From the Northeast Heights to the South Valley, out to unincorporated Bernalillo County and across the Sandoval County line into Rio Rancho, the standard floor is the same $12.00.

The Tipped Wage Is Where the City Line Bites

Albuquerque's ordinance sets the tipped cash wage at 60 percent of the city minimum, or $7.20 an hour for 2026. Statewide it is $3.00. Both carry the same backstop: if cash plus tips misses $12.00 an hour, the employer owes the difference.

That backstop is real, but it is not the same as a guaranteed floor before tips. On a dead Tuesday in February, a server inside city limits has $7.20 an hour of certainty going in. A server outside those limits has $3.00 and waits on the make-up math.

What decides it is the address where the work happens, not where you live or where payroll runs. The New Mexico Restaurant Association tells its own members the same in its wage guidance: follow the jurisdiction the restaurant sits in, and when rules conflict, follow the strictest.

On a 5 to 4 vote in June, the City Council passed O-26-33, raising the city minimum to $13.00 on January 1, 2027, then $14.00 in 2028 and $15.00 in 2029, with inflation adjustments after that. The City Clerk's notice of publication carries it as enacted ordinance O-2026-018.

The tipped share steps down as the base steps up: 55.5 percent of the city minimum in 2027, 52 percent in 2028, 50 percent in 2029. Because the base climbs faster than the percentage falls, tipped cash wages still rise.

January 1 is the first time in years Albuquerque's floor will sit above the state's. From that morning the city line matters for every hourly worker here, not just the ones working for tips.
